Convex Ostomy Products
A guide to convexity and why you might consider a convex ostomy product
;
Understanding convexity: Support for a more secure seal
Convexity is the outward curve built into some ostomy skin barriers (wafers). It applies gentle pressure around the stoma to help improve the fit and reduce leakage, supporting a more secure seal between the barrier and the skin.
What is convexity?
Convexity is the outward curving of the wafer or skin barrier
The curved shape provides gentle pressure around the stoma to improve contact with the skin and help maintain a secure seal.1
Because every body is different, convex systems can support a wide range of stoma profiles by helping maintain a reliable seal.

1.Position theskin barrier above a flushstoma. This also works with retracted stomas or with skin folds. |
2.The convex skin barrier exerts downwards pressure on the skin. |
3.The pressure on the peristomal skin will help the stoma protrude further into the pouch, allowing for a better seal and helping to. |
Why consider a Convatec convex solution?2
A convex pouching system may help if:
- You’re experiencing leakage
- Your stoma is level with the skin (flush) or pulled inward (retracted)
- Your abdomen has changed in shape or firmness
- You have skin folds, creases, or dips around your stoma
These factors can affect the way an ostomy system adheres to the body. Convexity is designed to improve the fit and help reduce leakage.
How convexity pouch systems work with a flush or retracted stoma¹
Convexity exerts downward and outward forces on the peristomal area to:
- Encourage stoma protrusion (especially helpful for flush or retracted stomas)
- Flatten creases or skin folds that compromise adhesion
- Improve barrier‑to‑skin contact and seal reliability during movement
;
Five characteristics of convexity
Convexity performance is defined by five characteristics that help clinicians match the barrier to each patient’s anatomy:
- Depth: Is the distance between the highest point on the skin barrier and the base of the skin barrier.
- Compressibility: The maximum amount a convex skin barrier can be flattened.
- Flexibility: How easily the barrier bends.
- Tension location: Where the convex dome presses downward and outward on the area around the stoma.
- Slope: The angle between the highest point on the skin barrier and the base of the skin barrier.
These characteristics guide clinicians in selecting the minimum effective convexity needed to achieve a secure, reliable seal.
Not all convexity is the same
All bodies are different, so convexity choice should be based on patients’ needs and anatomy.
Find the right convex fit for your body
Convatec offers a wide range of convex options designed to fit different anatomies and lifestyles. Selecting the right convexity fit can help reduce leakage, protect peristomal skin, and support longer, more comfortable wear time.
